The Directorate of Maritime Affairs in the Ministry of Works and Transport has discovered oil washed up on the beach near Longbeach Extension 1, north of Walvis Bay, recently.
The ministry's spokesperson Julius Ngweda told NBC News that the oil leaked from a tanker vessel curently within the port of Walvis Bay.
He said the vessel is known to the ministry.
Ngweda said the damaged fuel tanker has since been isolated to prevent any further oil leakages and containment booms have also been deployed to around the vessel.
The affected area will be cleaned up within the next few hours.
